Interview with Tigers Boss, Damion Freeman.

By Thomas Nicholls

The gaffer talks to www.saltdeanunited.co.uk ahead of the new season

With the beginning of the new league season just a few days away, we caught up with Tigers Boss Damion Freeman, who gave us an insight into how his side have fared in pre-season and his thoughts heading into the new domestic campaign.

SUFC - "Thank you for taking time out to speak to saltdeanunitedfc.co.uk, Damion, with the new season just a few days away, how would you assess the side's pre-season?"

DF - "You'll always get an honest answer from me, I would have liked a bit more out of pre-season game wise, myself and the rest of my staff started pre-season on the last week of June, the boys are incredibly fit but when you eliminate up to 15 players from last season, its almost like starting a new football club.

We've kept Ash Jones, who will be our club captain this year, we've kept Ryan Warwick, Jordan Pryor and Scott Marshall. I can see in training that within our new bunch, we've got a lot of talent there, a lot of hard work and the boys are incredibly fit. We've bought in some great additions from Peacehaven & Lewes.

It's been a challenge, the results in pre-season don't mean a great deal to me, what's important is the players have worked themselves into the ground and that's pleasing to see"

SUFC: "It must be quite a challenge having such a high turn around of players from one season to the next, how difficult has it been?"

DF: "We're pleased with the players we've bought in, very pleased. Unfortunately, we've had a few taken away from us and let's just say the way these transfers happen is a bit 'tricky'. It would be nice to have the conversation, but I understand some of the lads moving on, you've got to play at the highest level you can"

SUFC: "So, heading into the new campaign, what lessons would you say you've learned from last season?"

DF: "This year, we're doing it differently, we are going for younger, fitter players and players that will make a team. We had a scenario last season where a few players were clashing and others have got their head in the hands. I'm injecting a team feel and coming away from the individual element.

I know the standard and I know the team I need to put out to get the team out there.

Last season we were up there, but maybe with a better team spirit we would have stayed the distance. I'm happy with where we are at now as a team. I've got a young fit side, who are going to listen."

SUFC: "What test will Langney Wanderers provide on Saturday?"

DF : "We have fun with Langney shall we say, we were in the same league a few years back, they are good bunch of lads and I know a lot of the staff. We're very similar side in some respects, we both wear our hearts on our sleeve, let's put it that way!"

SUFC : "So, what can we expect from this new look Tigers side?"

DF: "As we get going, I believe we will get better and better. In terms of targets, I'd love for us to stay in the cup competitions for as long we can. I've got a good enough squad, I've got a young enough squad and I will have the ability to rotate.

I've got a great blend of youth and experience, we've bought a few in from Whitehawk and Lewes and I'd like to thank Darren Freeman, he's been unreal for us to be honest. I want us to be up there again.

It's a very competitive league and there's some great sides in the division, I imagine the likes of YMCA, Chichester and Pagham are always like to be right up there competing and it's down to us to push them all the way. "

SUFC : "Thank you for your time Damion, good luck on Saturday and good luck for the season!"
